Strap line : When Lord Buddha was asked, “What have you gained from medidation?”, He replied, “Nothing”. However, He said, “Let me tell you what I lost: Anger, Anxiety, Depression, Insecurity, fear of old age and death”. That is the power of meditation and for that serene and inexplicably beautiful experience; Shri Ram Chandra Mission is the go-to place. Gokul Sriman shares his experience at the Chennai center.

Shri Ram Chandra Mission is a non-profitable spiritual organisation with its World Headquarters at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It has branches in more than 120 countries; spread all over the world. The Mission was established and registered under the Societies Act in Lucknow in the year 1945 with its headquarters at Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The founder-president Shri Ram Chandraji Maharaj of Shahjahanpur, U.P. (affectionately known as Babuji) founded this Mission in memoriam his master and Adiguru Shri Ram Chandraji Maharaj of Fatehgarh, U.P. (affectionately known as Lalaji) with the aim of spiritual upliftment of the masses and to benefit all of humanity. The objectives of the Mission are as follows:

  • To educate and propagate amongst the masses the art and science of Yoga, (this is called Sahaj Marg, a modified form of Raja Yoga), made to suit present day conditions and needs.
  • To promote the feelings of mutual love and universal brotherhood irrespective of caste, creed, colour, language, nationality etc.
  • To conduct research in the field of Yoga and establish Research Institutes for the purpose.
  • To encourage research in Yoga, including granting of assistance to the persons interested in carrying out this work.
  • To ensure the maximum spread of the aforementioned objectives, every service provided by all of their centres are free of cost.

The centre is well equipped with a library, canteens, medical centre, lodging facilities etc; all, free of cost. Anyone who wishes to undergo this transformation through meditation can do so by staying at any of their centre along with their family/friends; the accommodation and food will be taken care of by the management, with no charge whatsoever. The only source of income for this noble organization is voluntary donations by satisfied patrons or brothers/sisters as they call them. Every centre has a medical centre which is accessible to everyone. All of the services provided by the hospital, including highly expensive surgeries, medications, treatments etc are all done pro-bono, in collaboration with leading doctors who come from hospitals around the city and the world, solely to help those in need. This particular aspect of the centre, among various other, is highly commendable and compelled me to listen to Mrs. Kasthuri with complete attention.

The need to live a simple and pious life as a member of a family is encouraged in the Sahaj Marg. It integrates one’s physical, mental and spiritual aspects without employing any pressure or force. It does not call for austerities, self-denial, penance or celibacy. One is asked to accept the problems and difficulties of daily life as divine blessings as this environment is considered ideal for spiritual development.

As mentioned earlier, there are no fees charged to practice this system and all are welcome. The sole qualification is the ‘willingness to participate’; the cast, creed, religion, gender, nationality or any another form of categorization is immaterial for this noble system and the services provided by their centers.

Sahaj Marg believes that where religion ends, spirituality begins. As per Babuji Maharaj’s teachings:

“GOD is not to be found within the fold of a particular religion or sect. He is not confined within certain forms nor is He to be traced out from within the scriptures. We have to seek Him in the inner most core of our Heart.”

Heartfulness Meditation:

Shri Kamlesh Patel has further simplified the Sahaj Marg system of meditation and has modernized it as the “Heartfulness Meditation” system. The willing participants are given 5-7 minutes of a relaxation techniques which relax their body, mind and spirit and makes them energetic and joyful throughout the day.

Volunteers from the mission visit schools, colleges, corporate and govt. offices, villages, temples etc., and invite people to join the relaxation and meditation sessions. It is amazing to note the enthusiasm evinced by the people and the interest they show in participating in these activities. Now, Heartfulness Meditation is spreading across the continents and several millions of people have taken it up. “On sundays we have group meditation several centers in India and many other countries. Semiinars and training programs are conducted on topics of spiritual interest” Kasthuri added.

30th April, the birth date of the Founder-President of Shri Ram Chandra Mission (Pujyashri Babuji Maharaj) has been declared as “Heartfulness Day” and tens of thousands of people are expected to participate in the celebrations world-wide.

I invite the readers to visit their website ‘heartfulness.org’ for further information so that you can be directed to a local trainer for learning the relaxation and meditation sessions. I highly recommend that everyone at the very least visit on of the Mission’s centers to experience the exalted nature of the Heartfulness Meditation. After all, this supreme experience is absolutely free.
